After offering a sermon this past Sunday which was about whether it is ok for Christians to have doubts, I stumbled upon something during my morning readings today which came lalongside that beautifully and I wanted to share it with you.
We modern humans have a strong need to pin things down, to nail down the details. In other words, WE WANT ANSWERS!! And we want them NOW! And you know what is at the root of that? Control. We feel off-kilter when we can't control as much as possible in our lives, and we walk around with the illusion that we actually have that control...as if we aren't one drunk driver...one unexpected job layoff, or one diagnosis away from the stark realization that that control really IS only an illusion.
But this thing we call "God" needs to remain a mystery in order for us to allow it to weave gently through our lives as it does its behind-the-scenes work. It needs to be the Thing that we instantly recognize as beyond our control, so that we might ultimately defer to the wisdom that we can receive from It. We have to allow the concepts our preferred faith teaches us to sit and marinate within us, eventually settling deeply into our souls so we can act from a place of light, goodness, and an inner "knowing". The gentler The Great Mystery sits within us, the less likely we are going to be to "kick it to the curb" and take over the reins, thereby losing access to the Guiding Spirit that assists us throughout our lives.
There is a freedom in letting go, and letting God take over. AA recognizes this to be true and teaches it. We are all free to know nothing!! And we just might be a little happier if we accepted that as truth.
In Light and Love,
Rev. Cindy
